Adventures in making briar roses

I like the idea of making a two-tiered flower that divides a starting ring into a top (dc) and bottom (trc) half. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhluBD7yUj8 is the best tutorial. I’ve seen the pattern written down but got lost in translation. Here are my efforts at the shape of that starting ring this while I am thinking of it.

effort one: chain five, sc 10 on top of them.

two: sc 10 into a knotted loop.

three: sc 10 into a magic ring and pull it closed before starting the first petal.

four: this is not a briar rose, rather I made another magic ring, sc 12, and made a 6-petal flat flower with trc.

five: sc 10 into a magic ring, and before starting petals of traditional pattern, switched to a smaller hook (from 6.5mm to 4.00mm). It’s cheating, but I really like to work into a ring with a smaller hook than I started with. Less tugging. I guess that means I pull them too tightly while I work, otherwise.

I think I’m starting to understand this ‘magic ring’ business better, too.

I don’t yet know how I feel about it, but this is a vaguely hellokitty-themed hat to give to friend for her birthday. It was inspired by a free pattern called “Urban Jungle” and was a great way to learn the puff stitch that makes up the body. The band base is a separate piece of double crochets and the bow is two rows of treble crochets with yarn cinching the middle. The only dilemma right now? It’s… big… bigger than intended. Puff stitches required pulling and wiggle room. I stretched the band wider than it was supposed to be, even for a loose, slouchy fit. If I decide it isn’t hat material after all… maybe a strap will make it a purse…

every part of my arms and hands and shoulders are sore. I should have made better decisions working on this last night/today. Ow.

I’m proud, though!

2/3 of my tumbling block triangles have been made. one more color.

sewing them together is going to be much harder than I seemed to think it would be when I came up with this plan. or lack thereof
